Overview
Alexander B. Cummings is a board member, seasoned global C-suite executive, and philanthropist with a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades in leadership roles at some of the world’s most recognized multinational corporations. Cummings currently serves on the board of S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc., where he serves as Chair of the Audit Committee, and has previously held board positions at Chevron; several publicly traded Coca-Cola Bottlers including Coca-Cola HBC and Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated; Africare; the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA); and Clark Atlanta University, where he served as Board Chairman. His leadership and commitment to excellence continue to shape his work across both the private and philanthropic sectors.
Career History
Cummings spent nearly 20 years at The Coca-Cola Company, rising to the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. In this capacity, he had global responsibility for Strategy, Human Resources, Legal, IT, Sustainability, Coca-Cola Foundation, and all the Technical Functions including R&D, Innovation, Supply Chain, Quality, Procurement, and Manufacturing, with an operating budget of ~$1B and leading thousands of employees worldwide. His leadership was instrumental in driving growth, streamlining operations, and fostering innovation across the company’s global footprint.
Previously, Cummings served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Coca-Cola’s Africa Group, responsible for business in 56 countries and territories. His tenure saw record-breaking sales and profit growth, as well as significant market expansion. He initially joined the company as Managing Director/Region Manager for Nigeria, where he quickly made his mark by boosting sales, profits, and driving market share.
Before his time at Coca-Cola, Cummings was Vice President of Finance at Pillsbury International, where he was responsible for the financial management of an over $1B international food business with operations in 16 countries. He was the youngest senior executive at Pillsbury at the time, rising through the ranks from an entry-level analyst position.
He began his professional business career in Liberia at the Liberian Bank for Development & Investment.
A strong advocate for entrepreneurship and development in Africa, Cummings is the Founder and Chairman of Cummings Investment Holdings, Ltd., and the Cummings Africa Foundation, which has invested over $1.5M in initiatives spanning health, education, and entrepreneurship in Liberia and across the continent. Cummings served as the Political Leader and Standard Bearer of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), while also formerly Chairman, leading the legal formation of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), the largest opposition electoral coalition in Liberia.
His contributions to business and society have been widely recognized. In 2015, Cummings received Liberia’s highest honor, the Humane Order of African Redemption, for his humanitarian efforts and dedication to advancing the nation.
Personal
Cummings earned a BA in Finance with a minor in Economics from Northern Illinois University and an MBA in Finance from Clark Atlanta University. He and his wife, Teresa, have been married for over 40 years and have two children and five grandchildren. They split their time between Monrovia, Liberia and Atlanta, Georgia.
